Jon “BONES” Jones is referred to, by many, as the best to ever step foot in the Octagon and his near-perfect record backs up the high respect fight fans adorn on him: 26 wins – 1 no contest – 1 defeat (due to an elbow strike disqualification). While his reputation inside the Octagon is legendary for the right reasons, outside, it has been marred by private life controversies, contract disputes, and allegations of banned substance abuse which led to him being stripped of his light heavyweight title twice. The last time we saw Jones compete was back in 2020 against Dominick Reyes at UFC 247; making his return this weekend a highly anticipated one. Over the last decade, we have seen Jones defeat legend after legend, including Daniel Cormier, Glover Teixeira, Alexander Gustafsson, and Lyoto Machida, showing few holes in his game over that time. However, the intrigue around this fight stems from Jones competing against a far heavier opponent in Gane, who’s revolutionized the heavyweight division with speed not usually associated with the big men of the sport. French native Gane, surprisingly, admits to not particularly being into training. He only hits the gym once a fight has been announced, and has barely trained since his last fight in September 2022. Gane is quoted saying “Unfortunately, I’m lazy, that’s the truth. I have a lot of media obligation and professional opportunities outside of the sport. You can’t say no to all these things. I also have to give time to my family and rest well.” This admission will surely worry his fans. UFC president Dana White stated to the press that a heavyweight title win against Gane would cement Jones’ position as the all-time No.1 in the sport: “When you talk about his legacy, if Jon Jones can come in and beat Ciryl Gane, I said this when I talked to you guys’ last time, nobody can deny that Jon Jones is the greatest of all-time.”
