Before the 2026 World Cup becomes a single-elimination affair, the Group Stage sets the table. Forty-eight teams, dispersed into 12 groups of four, will play three matches each to earn enough points to advance to the Last 32 – AKA the knockout rounds.
That serves up 72 Group Stage matches between June 11 and June 25, and for the first time ever, three nations combine to host the action – the USA, Mexico, and Canada. The 2022 Group Stage saw Germany suffer a shocking early exit. With an expanded field from 32 to 48 teams, 2026 Group Stage volatility could reach an all-time high.
We break down the structure, major dates, and the nations in each group.

Group Stage Structure
Teams qualify for the Group Stage in three ways: through continental qualification, the primary route via regional tournaments; the intercontinental playoffs, which decide the final spots; and automatic bids for the host nations – the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The Group Stage structure is as follows:
- 12 groups (from A to L), with 4 teams per group.
- Each team plays 3 matches (one against each opponent).
- A Win = 3 points. A Draw = 1 point. A Loss = 0 points.
- The top two teams from each group (24 total) automatically advance to the Last 32 round.
- Eight of the best third-placed teams in points also advance.
- The Group Stage tiebreakers are as follows: Points > net goals > goals scored.
The final group matches are played simultaneously on June 25.

Group Standings – All 12 Groups
Here are all 12 Groups in the 2026 World Cup from A to L with insights from the Bovada Trading team.
Group A
Mexico | South Africa | South Korea | Czechia
Trading Team insight: “The host cities tend to get the ‘gentle’ draw, and it starts with Mexico; only Czechia is a major competitor. And even with Czechia, they struggled in qualifying, needing penalties to beat Ireland and Denmark at home.”
Verdict: Mexico – Group A Winner
Group B
Canada| Bosnia and Herzegovina | Qatar | Switzerland
Trading Team insight: “Switzerland is the favorite, Canada is solid and should be electric on home field. But they’ll be neck and neck with Bosnia because they still have aging talisman Edin Dzeko.”
Verdict: Switzerland and Canada – 1st and 2nd Any Order
Group C
Brazil | Morocco | Haiti | Scotland
Trading Team insight: “Brazil always sets a high standard, but they struggled in CONMEBOL, qualifying just 5th – they’re vulnerable favorites. And now we’ve got Morocco, who we all remember breaking records in 2022, coming into 2026 as AFCON winners? They’ve got value.”
Verdict: Morocco – Group C Winner
should clean up; they’re the clear favorite. But we’ll adjust our odds pretty quickly if Morocco starts showing signs they’re ready for another 2022 run.”
Group D
USA | Paraguay | Australia | Türkiye
Trading Team insight: “Mauricio Pochettino leads Team USA on home soil, which could prove to be a monster advantage as Americans know how to bring home-field energy.
Paraguay is better on its home field, and Australia is on the decline. Turkey is the USA’s main competition, as they have some hot young talent in Arda Guler and Kenan Yildiz.
Verdict: USA and Turkey – 1st and 2nd Any Order
Group E
Germany | Curacao| Ivory Coast | Ecuador
Trading Team insight: “Looks like FIFA is making up for Germany’s early exit in 2022 with this group. But Ecuador really impressed in the CONEMBOL qualifier, finishing second behind Argentina, the 2022 champions. We think they could overcome ‘der Mannschaft.’”
Verdict: Ecuador – Group E Winner
Group F
Netherlands| Japan | Sweden | Tunisia
Trading Team insight: “The Netherlands are clearly the most talented squad, but we didn’t allow them to run away with the group because of Japan. Japan lit up the Group Stage in Qatar, and they just beat England at Wembley. Sweden, meanwhile, won the UEFA playoffs to reach the World Cup. This could be the most competitive division, but we don’t see Tunisia keeping up.
Verdict: Tunisia – Not to Advance
Group G
Belgium | Egypt | Iran | New Zealand
Trading Team insight: “Belgium will be the favorite, but we’re holding the odds off the board until we’re sure Iran is playing their US matches. They could even be replaced by Italy.”
Verdict: Belgium – Group G Winner
Group H
Spain | Cape Verde | Saudi Arabia | Uruguay
Trading Team insight: “Uruguay and Saudi Arabia are battling for distant second after Spain – Lamine Yamal is gonna go nuts for the Spaniards. Saudi Arabia is interesting, they beat Argentina in Qatar, and so they’re more than capable of giving us another World Cup shocker.”
Verdict: Saudi Arabia – To Advance to Group Stage
Group I
France | Senegal| Iraq | Norway
Trading Team insight: “France are the faves with elite attacking firepower, but they aren’t alone. Norway boasts top attackers of their own in Alexander Sorloth and Erling Haaland. Senegal offers physicality and pace, capable of upsetting the top European nations. They just beat England comfortably last summer. This group is ripe for upsets.”
Verdict: Norway – Group I Winner
Group J
Argentina| Algeria | Austria | Jordan
Trading Team insight: “Argentina is the fave, but Austria could surprise. Austria is solid and should cause problems for an aging Argentine squad. Lionel Messi will have plenty of support from US crowds, but he and ‘la Albiceleste’ are coming in cold after La Finalissima match vs. Spain was postponed.”
Verdict: Austria – Group J Winner
Group K
Portugal | DR Congo | Uzbekistan | Colombia
Trading Team insight: “Colombia is sure to attract huge crowds, giving them some home advantage in North America. DR Congo are a solid African squad despite not having the all-star appeal. Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal is the favorite to win the group, but can Portugal’s stars gel with or without Ronaldo? In Qatar, it felt like they were waiting on him to make things happen.”
Group L
England | Croatia | Ghana | Panama
Trading Team insight: “It’s not a World Cup if there’s not a little British heartbreak and FIFA are following the script. England has to navigate through Croatia, an athletic Ghana, and a tough Panama team. Group L could be the “Group of Death.”
Verdict: Panama – Not to Advance
How Standings and Metrics Work
Things are going to get a bit messy when you’re trying to figure out which third-place teams have enough points to advance. Here’s how to understand every stat and every tiebreaker in the Group Stage.
Each tiebreaker if teams are level on points:
- 1st – Goal Difference (GD): goals scored minus goals conceded.
- 2nd – Goals For (GF): most goals scored wins the tiebreak
- 3rd – Head-to-head record: result of the match between the tied teams
- 4th – Fair play record: yellow and red card count
- 5th – FIFA World Ranking: higher-ranked team advances
