The Ballon d’Or is the MVP award for footballers. But unlike the NFL or NBA, there are no league restrictions; a winner could come from an English Premier League club or a small-market Major League Soccer squad. If you’re balling like nobody else on the pitch, you have a shot at soccer’s top individual prize.
Europe has historically dominated the award. However, this year’s top five 2026 Ballon d’Or odds include one contender who made his mark in the United States. Expect the odds to stay the same until the 2026 prize is awarded at the London Palladium on October 26.
Here is how the voting works, what the leading contenders achieved, and how to read the betting market.

What Is the Ballon d’Or?
France Football created the Ballon d’Or in 1956 to recognize the world’s best footballer, with separate men’s and women’s awards. Most odds you’ll find on the event, are focused on the men’s side of things.
The award is separate from FIFA’s World Cup Golden Ball, which is an MVP award focused solely on that tournament. The Ballon d’Or covers every league and tournament, including World Cup performances if they fall within the same window. The official evaluation period runs from August 3, 2025, through July 19, 2026, so performances from the new club season fall outside it.
How Is the Ballon d’Or Winner Chosen?
Journalists representing the top 100 countries in FIFA’s rankings vote on the men’s award. Each ranks ten players from a 30-man shortlist, awarding 15 points for first, then 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. The highest total wins, with first-place votes breaking an initial tie. The criteria, in order of importance, are individual performance and decisive impact; team performance and trophies; then class and fair play. No automatic formula links goals or titles to votes, and fans do not decide the official winner. As you can guess, that leads to controversy.
Controversies and Unwritten Rules
If you’ve been part of any MVP discussion, you know about the eternal argument between individual dominance and team success. In 2024, Real Madrid boycotted the ceremony after Vinícius Júnior lost to Rodri, whose Manchester City and Spain achievements supported his case. That dispute shows why a Champions League triumph doesn’t guarantee the award.
There are also historical patterns rather than secret eligibility rules. Attackers dominate the winners list; Lev Yashin remains the only goalkeeper to win it. Big tournament moments can strengthen a candidate’s case, while star teammates competing for recognition can complicate voters’ rankings. Those are considerations for handicapping a subjective vote, not proven instructions to jurors. Neither World Cup glory nor the highest goal total guarantees victory.
Think of it like the Oscars or Grammys; it’s about marketing, impact, and timing, not just the stats.
Top Five Contenders in Bovada’s Ballon d’Or Odds
Harry Kane -180
Kane is the clear favorite, and it starts with his overwhelming production: 61 goals in 51 games for Bayern Munich, including 36 Bundesliga goals, and the European Golden Shoe, the annual award for the top goal scorer. His scoring prowess led Bayern Munich to both the Bundesliga and German Cup, scoring a hat-trick in the cup final.
Going by the odds, his main obstacle is Lamine Yamal’s World Cup success. As we said, timing, impact, and momentum matter.
Lamine Yamal +150
Yamal’s case combines creativity, individual recognition, and major trophies. He produced 24 goals and 18 assists across all competitions for Barcelona in LaLiga, earning Player of the Season honors as Barcelona retained the title, then added World Cup glory with Spain. His ability to beat defenders and create opportunities for teammates gives voters reasons to support him beyond his goals. Kane has the bigger numbers, but Yamal offers a compelling mix of club and international success, plus youth and a name with World Cup pedigree.
Kylian Mbappé +2200
Mbappé dominated scoring charts across multiple competitions. He registered 42 goals in 44 appearances for Real Madrid, winning the Pichichi with 25 league goals and leading the Champions League with 15. Those European numbers strengthen his case as someone who can dominate even as the sole star on his team. His pace, finishing and ability to deliver against elite opposition make him a legitimate candidate, but his price reflects the challenge of overtaking both Kane and Yamal.
Lionel Messi +2200
He may be in MLS, but he’s still in the mix. Messi’s candidate profile lists 45 goals and 30 assists in 49 appearances, leading Inter Miami to its first MLS Cup. He also recorded eight goals and four assists in the 2026 World Cup, earning the Silver Ball. And the icing on the cake is … he’s Messi and proved in 2026 that any chance his skills have nosedived with age is overblown. He’s a longshot, but he’s also Messi.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia +2500
Kvaratskhelia was central to PSG’s back-to-back Champions League un, recording 10 goals and six assists and winning the competition’s Player of the Season award. His contributions include two goals against Bayern and drawing the penalty that helped PSG tie Arsenal in the final. These were decisive moments against the strongest opposition. And as we said, moments in the Ballon d’Or chase matter. At +2500, he’s a longshot with a case built on performances that helped secure Europe’s biggest club trophy.
How Bovada’s Ballon d’Or Odds Work
Ballon d’Or odds are outright winner bets. Simple: pick the player you believe will win the award. The listed odds show potential profit, with the stake returned separately on a winning bet. At −180, a $180 Kane wager earns $100 profit; at +150, $100 on Yamal earns $150. A $100 winning bet on Mbappé or Messi earns $2,200, while Kvaratskhelia returns $2,500 profit.
Kane’s price implies about a 64.3% probability of winning the award, and Yamal’s 40%. Keep in mind these are odds based on statistics and probabilities, not official vote forecasts or insider info. A bigger payout means a longer price, not necessarily better value.
