Ten days into the 2024 Paris Olympics, the United States and China are the front runners for the most gold medals won. USA has 24 to China’s 22, with Australia next in line with 14. However, the overall medal count is much more favorable to the Americans who have 86 compared to China’s 59.

Track and Field Highlights
Tuesday’s Olympiad action turned out to be a successful day for Team USA on the track; as four American sprinters saw the podium. In the women’s 200-Meter final, Gabby Thomas earned her first Olympic gold and teammate Brittany Brown took bronze.
Men’s 1,500-Meter Final Drama
The men’s 1,500-meter final had a dramatic build up between the reigning world champion from Britain, Josh Kerr, and Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the reigning Olympic champion. Months of jibing and mind games between the two decorated rivals let American Cole Hocker, in his own words, “fly under the radar” and win his first gold medal.
The competition was fierce as seven of the twelve sprinters set personal bests.
Ingebrigtsen went against his own game plan by starting too fast and faded away in the final 100 meters. Kerr, who ultimately won the silver medal, lost his speed in the most crucial moments as he peaked well before the finish line. Hocker flew past them with just 20 meters to go to pull off the upset. His American teammate Yared Nuguse won bronze.
US Women’s Soccer Team Advances
US Women’s soccer will play in the gold medal match for the first time since 2012 after defeating Germany 1-0. This was the second straight match that the USWNT won in extra time. The lone score was off the foot of forward Sophia Smith, her third Olympic goal (all three have been against the Germans in their two meetings). USA will be seeking their 5th gold medal when they meet Brazil on Saturday. The Brazilians are a force to be reckoned with, beaming with confidence from their 4-2 upset of reigning world champions, Spain. Brazil is seeking their first Olympic title.

Men’s Basketball Intensifies
The men’s basketball tournament is heating up as the games have moved to Paris with the conclusion of gymnastics at Bercy Arena. The remaining countries are now facing single elimination with all four games being played in the same location on Tuesday. Needless to say these games now have an NCAA tournament atmosphere.
Durant Breaks Olympic Record
Team USA is advancing to the hardwood semifinals after a 122-87 rout over Brazil. Kevin Durant broke the all-time American Olympic scoring record. Lisa Leslie previously held the record with 488 points scored over four Olympic appearances. Durant’s teammates celebrated his accomplishment in the locker room, rewarding him the game ball.
Team USA (-1600) vs Serbia (+850)
There are just two games standing in between Team USA and another gold medal. First up on Thursday, a rematch with Serbia who just pulled off a huge come-from-behind victory over Australia after trailing by as many as 24 points. Nikola Jokic was once again brilliant in the final minutes of the overtime win as he finished with 21 points, 14 rebounds, and 8 assists. Serbia and Team USA met in the first game of the tournament less than two weeks ago. The 26 point American victory was fueled by incredible shooting; five players scored in double-digits with a whopping 62% from the field. Durant was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field in the first half. Team captain LeBron James delivered his best performance of these Olympics against Serbia with 21 points, 9 assists, and 7 rebounds. Head coach Steve Kerr continues to stress the importance of unselfish basketball, high octane tempo and swift focus in this knockout round as USA seeks their 5th straight gold medal.
Germany will play France, who just pulled off an upset themselves over the talented Canadian team.
