The all-time rankings debate is always evolving, but one comparison that deserves more attention is between Dwyane Wade and Kevin Durant. Durant is often comfortably placed ahead on historical lists because of his scoring titles and MVP, but when you look deeper—especially at playoff impact and leadership – there’s a strong case that Wade should rank higher all time.

Championship Runs and Finals Impact
Start with championships and Finals impact. Wade won three titles (2006, 2012, 2013) with the Miami Heat and was the clear driving force behind one of them. In the 2006 NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks, Wade delivered one of the greatest Finals performances ever: 34.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 46.8% from the field. After Miami fell behind 0–2, Wade completely took over the series, including a legendary 42-point Game 3 and a 36-point closeout in Game 6. It remains one of the clearest examples of a single superstar carrying a team to a championship.
Supporting Casts and Team Context
Durant, on the other hand, didn’t win his championships until joining a historically stacked Golden State Warriors roster that already featured Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. While Durant won Finals MVP in 2017 and 2018, the context matters: he joined a 73-win team that had already won a title and reached back-to-back Finals without him. Wade, by contrast, proved he could lead a championship team as the undisputed No. 1 option.
When looking at playoff resilience, Wade’s résumé also compares favorably. Across his career, Wade averaged 22.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.9 assists in the playoffs, with multiple deep runs as the primary engine of Miami’s offense. Beyond the 2006 title, Wade led the Heat to the 2011 NBA Finals and was arguably Miami’s best player in that series, averaging 26.5 points and 7.0 rebounds while shooting 54.6%. Even with LeBron James joining the team, Wade remained an elite playoff performer and a critical part of two more championships.
Playoff Performances and Legacy Moments
Durant’s playoff history, meanwhile, includes a surprising number of high-profile disappointments. During his time with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Durant and Russell Westbrook had multiple opportunities to win a title but repeatedly fell short. The most infamous collapse came in the 2016 Western Conference Finals against the Warriors, when Oklahoma City blew a 3–1 series lead. Durant struggled in the closing stretch of that series, shooting just 10-for-31 in Game 6 and committing costly turnovers as Golden State completed the comeback.
His post-Warriors career has added more questions. With the Brooklyn Nets, Durant led a heavily hyped superteam that never made the Finals and was swept in the first round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs by the Boston Celtics while averaging nearly six turnovers per game in the series.
Defense, Playmaking, and Overall Skillset
Statistically, Durant is one of the greatest scorers ever—four scoring titles and a career average of around 27 points per game. But Wade’s peak impact on both ends of the floor shouldn’t be overlooked. In his prime, Wade was an elite two-way guard who led the league in scoring in 2009 (30.2 PPG), made three All-Defensive teams, and finished top five in MVP voting five times.
Wade was the better defender and the better playmaker. Durant is the (slightly) better scorer and better off-ball player.
Ultimately, the difference comes down to leadership and postseason legacy. Wade proved he could carry a franchise to a championship and consistently elevate his team in the biggest moments. Durant’s incredible scoring talent is undeniable, but his career includes more playoff collapses and a pair of championships that came in historically favorable circumstances.
For those reasons, Wade’s résumé deserves to be ranked ahead of Durant’s on the all-time list – as of today, I have Wade 12th all-time and KD 18th.
