I don’t know if you agree, but the return of the English Premier League (EPL) felt like it turned up faster than Noah Lyles in the 100m final. I was still shaking off the gut-wrenching disappointment of England crashing out of the Euro final against Spain and deciding whether four years is long enough for me to become an Olympic breakdancer in time for the LA games, at the age of 47 years old.

I think I am gold medal ready for that particular event.

Game week 1 of the EPL did not disappoint. Soccer giants Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United started their campaign with convincing wins. Meanwhile, clubs such as Aston Villa and Brighton continue to show their progress with brilliant wins in their opening matches.

Weekend Highlight

A weekend highlight for Man City fans was Erling Haaland making Chelsea’s Cuccrella eat his words. After winning the Euros 2024, Spanish defender Marc Cucurella sang a song with the mention of Haaland in the lyrics. He sang: “Cucu cucu-rella, he eats paella, Cucu cucu-rella he drinks Estrella, Haaland you’d better tremble because Cucurella is coming.”

Haaland responded by skipping past Cucurella to score the opening goal of the 0-2 winning match for the ever-dominant City.

Week 2: Aston Villa v Arsenal

Turning our focus to game week 2, arguably it will be all eyes on Aston Villa v Arsenal this Saturday August 24th.

Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins insists he is “ready for another big year” after being named in the Professional Football Association Team of the Year in Manchester on Tuesday night.

Striker Watkins fired Villato fourth place in the Premier League last season with 19 goals as Unai Emery’s side defied all expectations to qualify for this season’s Champions League.

Villa were the only side who managed to beat Arsenal home and away last season and were by far the biggest obstacle to the Gunners lifting the title, which ended up being just a two-point gap to Pep Guardiola’s Man City side.

This time around, Arsenal travel to Aston Villa motivated and seeking revenge. Villa meanwhile will certainly be looking to build on their opening day win over West Ham United without Luiz in their side but backed by defensive midfield summer signing Amadou Onana.

Other Exciting Matches

This weekend, other matches to look out for include my beloved Manchester United travelling south to face Brighton. United earned themselves a home win against Fulham last Friday in an overall lackluster performance with a spattering of positive moments, including a debut goal for summer signing young striker Zirkzee. United needs to form a winning streak to keep up with their rivals; however, Brighton at home is a force to be reckoned with.

Manchester City welcome newly promoted Ipswich to the Etihad Stadium. Can Ipswich pull off a bet buster with a win against the four-time Champions? Let’s take a look at the odds….
