NCAA Week 1 felt like Star Wars: The Last Jedi – a ton of hype going in, only for our high expectations to be purposefully blown up.

Arch Manning wasn’t the polished No. 1 draft pick we all expected. No. 8 Alabama had its first Week 1 loss in 24 years. And then you have Bill Belichick’s North Carolina Tar Heels … yeesh.

The NCAAF Week 2 odds are going to be all about the main NCAA protagonists rebounding on Saturday. The matchups are not nearly as juicy, but the pressure is on a lot of programs and players to right the ship before playoff chances slip away.

Main Event Matchups – Saturday, September 6, 2025

San Jose State Spartans @ No. 1 Texas Longhorns

  • Odds: Texas -37
  • Total: 52
  • Time: 12 p.m. ET
  • Channel: ABC

Normally, one might ignore a game that lists the Longhorns as 37-point favorites. But the Arch Manning saga took an interesting turn in Week 1; everyone will be tuning in to see what happens next.

After looking lost against No. 3 Ohio State, Manning fell from first to sixth among Heisman favorites – oddsmakers aren’t expecting Manning-brain 5D chess on the field anymore. An outstanding performance versus a light opponent like San Jose State could restore that aura. The hitch: Texas coach Steve Sarkisian may dial up a run-heavy plan.

In San Jose State’s Week 1 loss to Central Michigan, they gave up 247 yards on 50 carries – the Chippewas only had to pass the ball 13 times. Meanwhile, against No. 3 Ohio State, Texas’ rushing attack was the lone bright spot on offense, running it 37 times for 166 yards in a 14-7 loss. Running the ball may be the more efficient, safer offensive gameplan for the Longhorns.

Also, it’s doubtful the Spartans will spark a shootout against a Longhorns defense that held the Buckeyes to just two touchdowns. San Jose State QB Walker Eget was admirable in a Week 1 loss, throwing for 308 yards – 189 of them to sophomore receiver Danny Scudero. But the Longhorns just held generational wideout Jeremiah Smith to six catches for 43 yards; Spartan completions are going to be hard to come by.

Texas was 3-1 against the spread (ATS) as a 30-plus favorite in 2024.

Iowa Hawkeyes @ No. 22 Iowa State Cyclones

  • Odds: Iowa State -3
  • Total: 41
  • Time: 12 p.m. ET
  • Channel: FOX

Not quite Michigan/Ohio State or the Iron Bowl, but Cy-Hawk is reliably nasty. For the first time since 2021, Iowa State is favored – though home field hasn’t helped: the Cyclones are 9–22 in Ames, Iowa. The total opened at 41, fitting a bruising, low-scoring trend: seven of the last 10 games went under; last year’s rare “over” was 20–19 on a 36.5 total.

With a three-point spread, oddsmakers see another coin flip: the last 10 games are 5–5 ATS, and the spread has topped four points only twice. The story leading into this matchup is that Cyclones QB Rocco Becht has been on fire, posting 461 yards, five touchdowns, and zero interceptions in two weeks of football. But disclaimer: Stats against other squads never seem to carry over to the Cy-Hawk rivalry.

No. 14 Michigan Wolverines @ No. 18 Oklahoma Sooners

  • Odds: -5.5
  • Total: 45.5
  • Time: 7:30 p.m. ET
  • Channel: ABC

In an NCAAF Week 1 filled with disappointments and upsets, the Wolverines and Sooners quietly handled their opponents.
Now things get interesting: Michigan opens as an underdog against a stiff Oklahoma team.

The biggest concern for the Sooners is their struggles on the ground versus Illinois State. They ran for just 103 yards on 32 carries against a squad from the Missouri Valley Conference, a troubling sign considering Michigan allowed just 50 yards rushing last week and ranked fifth against the run in 2024. They lost defensive tackles Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant to the 2025 NFL draft, but they’ve reloaded. Early returns show they’re still stout.

Where the Sooners have the advantage is experience. Bryce Underwood showed promise as the Wolverines’ starting QB, but he’s a true freshman and has never faced a defense on the level of the Sooners. They held Illinois State to just 34 yards passing and 151 total yards last week. Their front is also deeper on paper, with defensive tackle Damonic Williams returning as captain.
This marks just the second time Michigan and Oklahoma have met. The last time was 1976
