5. UMBC Makes NCAA Tournament History (2018 First Round)
March Madness is known for its shocking upsets, but until 2018, no No. 16 seed had ever beaten a No. 1 seed in the first round. That changed when the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) stunned the college basketball world by defeating top-seeded Virginia.
It wasn’t a miracle buzzer-beater that propelled them to the second round either; they throttled the Hoos 74-54, securing their first win in school history in dramatic fashion. Despite falling in the next round, this monumental upset remains one of the most incredible March Madness moments of all time.
4. Chris Webber’s Costly Timeout (1993 National Championship Game)
Not all historical moments are positive moments. The Michigan Wolverines were the darlings of college basketball as five talented freshmen (AKA The Fab Five) dominated opponents and set fashion trends with long, baggy shorts, black shoes, and black socks.
Although they lost to Duke 71-51 in the 1992 title game, they returned to the NCAA championship game in 1993, this time in a nail-biter against North Carolina.
Unfortunately, down by two with seconds left, Wolverines star Chris Webber committed one of the biggest blunders of all time: trapped by defenders, he called a timeout with no timeouts left. This resulted in a technical foul, sealing North Carolina’s win and leaving Webber’s error as one of the most infamous moments in college basketball history.
3. NC State’s Shocking Championship Upset (1983 National Championship)
Few upsets are as legendary as NC State’s 1983 National Championship win over Houston’s powerhouse “Phi Slamma Jamma,” featuring future Hall-of-Famer Hakeem Olajuwon. Despite Houston opening as a 7.5-point favorite in the National Championship, the Wolfpack kept the game close.
And with time running out, Dereck Whittenburg launched a desperation shot, only for teammate Lorenzo Charles to catch the miss and dunk it just before the buzzer. NC State literally slammed the Phi Slamma Jamma to earn an improbable national championship.
2. Christian Laettner’s Iconic Shot (1992 Elite Eight)
Christian Laettner can’t step foot in Kentucky for a reason.
During Duke’s quest for back-to-back titles in the 1992 NCAA Tournament, their run nearly ended in the Elite Eight against the Kentucky Wildcats, as the Blue Devils trailed 103–102 with just 2.1 seconds remaining and the ball inbounding on the far side of the court. Grant Hill launched a desperate full-court pass to Laettner, who caught it, turned, and buried a perfect jumper at the buzzer – earning the disdain of an entire state for the rest of his life.
Duke advanced and later won the national championship, making Laettner’s shot one of the most replayed moments in NCAA history.
1. Kris Jenkins’ Championship-Winning Buzzer Beater (2016 National Championship Game)
One of the craziest buzzer-beater moments came in the last decade.
In the 2016 National Championship Game, Villanova had their three-point lead erased by North Carolina’s Marcus Paige, who hit an incredible double-clutch three-pointer with 4.7 seconds left, tying the game at 74. After such a wild shot, it looked like the championship was headed to overtime.
But Villanova had other plans. After the quick inbound, guard Ryan Arcidiacono pushed the ball up the floor before kicking it out to teammate Kris Jenkins. Jenkins caught the pass in rhythm and launched a three-pointer that dropped cleanly through the net as time expired, giving Villanova a stunning 77–74 victory and instantly securing one of the most dramatic finishes in college basketball history.
Jenkins’ buzzer-beater has since become one of the defining moments of recent March Madness history, replayed every year as a reminder of how quickly the tournament can deliver unforgettable magic.
Honorable Mentions
Mario Chalmers’ Miracle Shot (2008 National Championship Game)
In the 2008 National title game between the Kansas Jayhawks and Memphis Tigers, down three, Chalmers sent the crowd and announcers into a frenzy with a game-tying three with 2.1 seconds left to push his Jayhawks into overtime. Kansas went on to win the national championship, and the play became known as “Mario’s Miracle.”
Steph Curry and Davidson’s Cinderella Run (2008 Tournament)
Before Curry was dropping daggers on NBA opponents and the French, he was leading the small, obscure school of Davidson to the Elite Eight. Curry 86’d top programs like the Gonzaga Bulldogs, Georgetown Hoyas, and Wisconsin Badgers by averaging 33 points per game during the tournament. NBA teams should’ve known what was coming.
Bryce Drew Drops “The Shot” (1998 First Round)
In the first round of the 1998 tournament, Bryce Drew of the underdog Valparaiso Crusaders blew up March Madness brackets with a game-winning three-pointer to send the Ole Miss Rebels packing in the first round. Not only did it execute a perfect full-court inbounds play, but a forgotten fact is that Ole Miss forward Ansu Sesay had to miss two free throws to even open the door for Drew to punch through.
