This summer the Toronto Raptors will be looking to upgrade their roster to get them back to being a contender in the East. The Raptors are finding themselves in a backsliding period, missing the playoffs every year since acquiring Rj Barrett. According to HoopHype’s Michael Soto, The Raptors had a trade package in place that included Barrett for Brandon Ingram before the February NBA Deadline. After another mediocre season and the Raptors looking to be all in for their future with Scottie Barnes and newly acquired forward Brandon Ingram, it may be time to move on from Rj Barrett.

Portland Trail Blazers

Raptors get: Jeramy Grant, 2027 & 2028 2nd round

Trail Blazers get: RJ Barrett and Ochai Agbaji

This trade works financially for both team due to both players having similar long-term deals, Portland gets to stay under the first apron and Toronto can extend Quickley while keeping flexibility with their cap space.

Why the Trail Blazers make the trade:

The Trail Blazers find themselves in a rebuilding phase gathering young talented pieces such as, Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe and Donovan Clingan but also have vets around that can mold the team into future winners like, Deandre Ayton and Robert Williams. Barrett will fit right into the veteran group and will provide size on the wing and physical defense. At 6’6 Barrett is a reliable ball handler and playmaker averaging 5 assists last season, he’ll be able to take some of the playmaking pressures off scoot while also being a viable scoring option as Barrett averaged 20+ points in back to back seasons for the first time in his career. Futhermore, Agbaji is a young talent that proved that he can hold his own on the floor after finding his footing with Toronto last season averaging 10PPG and was a crucial defender for the Raptors.

Why the Raptors make the trade:

For the Raptors Jerami Grant is a proven two way forward that fits the retooling of this Raptors squad. Grant before having a low season in games played and points was playing some of his best basketball averaging 20ppg in back to back seasons with the Trail Blazers. Grant will bring a veteran presence with playoff experience that will bold well for a team is trying to find they’re way back to playoffs.

Washington Wizards

Raptors get: Corey Kispert, Delon Wright (sign-and-trade) or Landry Shamet, 2026 2nd round pick

Wizards get: Rj Barrett, 2025 second round pick

Why the Wizards make the trade:

For the Wizards, they are another rebuilding organization who can afford to take on a player like Rj Barrett. Barrett is still only 24 with upside that can beneficial to Washington’s developmental pathway during this rebuild mode. RJ can be an instant impact on defense as the Wizards allowed 120 points a game last season. Trading for Rj the wizards give themselves an NBA ready wing on a 3 year contract who can help direct this team during a hard rebuilding phase.

Why the Raptors make this trade:

For Toronto, Kispert is a deadly three point shooter, shooting a career 38.7% from three. He will space the floor for Toronto as Scottie Barnes and Brandon Ingram make their living predominantly inside the arc. Kispert also gives Toronto great value as he is still on a rookie contract for the next two seasons; even with the addition of Delon Wright or Landry Shamet, Toronto’s pocket books opens up between 15-20m in cap space, giving them the flexibility to get another high end player.

Brooklyn Nets

Raptors get: Dorian Finney- Smith, Cam Thomas and 2027 second round pick

Nets get: Rj Barrett and 2025 second round pick

Why the Nets make this trade:

The Nets are another organization that are trying to figure out if they are a piece away from making a playoff push or if they are closer to a rebuild. Before missing the playoffs two years in a row the Nets were in the playoffs consecutively for 5 seasons (2018-2023). No matter what decision the organization makes RJ Barrett can be the focal point of the pivot being made. Barrett will come in and fill the role of being a combo forward while providing defensive help that Cam Thomas lacked. Furthermore Thomas is due for a pay day, trading the young guard now saves the nets if Thomas doesn’t pan out for the organization.

Why the Raptors make the trade:

For Toronto they will be getting a young guard in Cam Thomas that can light it up on any given night. Cam Thomas can come off the bench or start and be threat to give the opposition 20 plus as he averaged 22.5 last year while being efficient. Thomas is just 23 years old on a valuable deal, Raptors can resign him or flip him if he does not fit into their scheme long term. With Dorian Finney-Smith, the Raptors will be getting a true 3 and D player with a veteran presence. DFS is a career 36.2% from behind the arc and can serve as a floor space for the attacking Scottie Barnes and Mid range threat in Brandon Ingram. This Trade will also open up around 10 million in future cap flexibility for the Raptors

Phoenix Suns

Raptors get: Grayson Allen, 2026 Second round pick and 2028 second round pick (via swap or least favorable)

Suns get: Rj Barrett and Chris Boucher

Why the Suns make the trade:

With Kevin Durant practically on to his next team, the Suns can utilize Barrett as another wing that will be able to get a bucket next to Devin Booker. Barrett’s upside on defense is higher than the defense they will be losing out on Allen. His 6’6 frame provides a more switchable defense and physicality on the wing that Allen lacked. Trading for Barrett allows the Suns to get younger while still being able to contend in the west.

Why the Raptors make the trade:

Grayson has been a deep threat since his days at Duke, he will make an instant impact spacing the floor and elite shooting. Grayson shot over 40% from 3 in his past two seasons with the Suns. Grayson doesn’t need the ball in his hands to be effective in his role like Barrett did, that will allow Scottie and Ingram more opportunities to be effective with the ball in their hands. Grayson current contract allows a bit more flexibility with long term money and Allen would be moveable any the deadline if Toronto wants to move him.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Raptors get: Donovan Mitchell

Cavaliers get: Rj Barrett, Gradey Dick, Ochai Agbaji, 3 filler players and 25, 26, 27 first round picks.

Why the Cavaliers make the trade:

Cavaliers had a disappointing playoff run after finishing the regular season on the top of the East standing, losing in the second round to the Pacers. Since acquiring Mitchell the Cavaliers only has made it to the second round of the playoffs, pretty underwhelming for a team that finished 1st in standings last season and 4th the previous two seasons. If the Cavs were ever unsure of Mitchell and the success that he can bring to Cleveland, they can take this trade and focus on the core of Darius Garland, Evan Mobley and Jared Allen. Cavs in this sense would set themselves up for the future with the first round picks and young players acquired while also remaining relevant in the East.

Why the Raptors make the trade:

Simple, go all in to contend for the Finals. We’ve seen this game plan work for the Raptors before when train for Kawahi Leonard ultimately bringing the Larry O’Brien trophy to Toronto. Donovan Mitchell Is an ultimate win now move for the Raptors while keeping Quickley, Brandon Ingram and Scottie Barnes. Mitchell has made a name for himself being one of the best combo guards in the league, being able to score at any level, at any given time. The six time All-Star is exactly what Toronto has been missing since Kawahi left for the Clippers.
