Not much comes close to the thrill of watching the wheel spin and the ball bounce around before landing in one of the pockets, hoping that it leads to a payout. On top of all the fun, you can also win real money when playing online roulette too, and that’s exactly these 10 roulette tips are for.

Our top 10 roulette tips and tricks will focus on how you can maximize your returns at the virtual wheel. By following these tips, you can keep the house edge as low as possible, while also getting the highest entertainment value possible from all the great roulette games we have on the menu.

1. Avoid Progressive Betting Strategies

When Blaise Pascal invented the precursor to the roulette wheel in the 1650s, people didn’t really understand probability all that well – and most still don’t, despite Pascal’s groundbreaking work in the field.

Nearly every roulette betting system out there relies on a fallacy known as the Maturity of Chance. If you flip a fair coin 10 times, and it comes up Heads each time, what are the chances the next flip will be Tails?

The answer is 50%. It’s always 50%, even if you get 100 Heads in a row, or 1,000. You’re not “due” to get Tails just because it hasn’t happened in a while; the universe isn’t trying to balance out the number of Heads and Tails in the short term.

This is why progressive betting systems like the Martingale don’t work. If you bet $1 on Black, then double your bet every time you lose, counting on the wheel to eventually turn your way, you might be able to make some money in the short term – or you might drain your entire bankroll before that little white roulette ball finally lands on Black. Don’t let this happen to you.

2. Choose the Right Bet Size for Your Bankroll

Instead of changing your bet size according to the results of each spin, use the same bet size every time you play roulette at Bovada Casino. And that bet size should be appropriate for your bankroll. By dividing your roll into, say, 100 units, you can bet one unit at a time, knowing that you’ll get in at least 100 spins. As your roll goes up and down between sessions, you can increase or decrease your bet size accordingly, so you still have 100 units to play with.

3. Have a Plan for Your Roulette Sessions

You can’t control how much money you win at the roulette wheel, but you can control how much time you spend playing. If you know roughly how many spins you take per minute, and the house edge for the bets you make (which we’ll get to shortly), you can use simple math to give you a baseline expectation for how long of a session you can afford at your chosen bet size.

Want to play a longer session? All you have to do is divide your bankroll into more units – maybe 200 will do the trick. Want to play a shorter session? Use fewer units, but choose a number that’s still appropriate for your bankroll.

Whatever the case, make sure that you stop playing roulette once your scheduled time is over. There will always be another game at Bovada waiting for you down the road.

4. Set a Stop-Loss Limit

Don’t feel the need to complete your scheduled session if things aren’t going well. These games are for entertainment, so if you’re not having fun anymore for any reason, just stop playing and come back another time.

That reason will usually be because the wheel hasn’t been very kind to you. One effective way to help prevent you from going “on tilt” and chasing losses is by setting a stop-loss limit; if you’re down, say, 10 units at any one time, quit playing, even if it’s earlier than you would have liked. If you’re the type who tilts easily, make it five units instead – whatever it takes to keep you in the right frame of mind.

5. Learn All the Different Bets You Can Make

Once you’ve gotten those bankroll management principles down pat, you can move on to our next set of best roulette tips, which focus on the game itself. The more you learn about roulette, the more you’ll enjoy the game, so take the time to get comfortable with the dozens and dozens of different roulette bets you can make.

To keep things simple, you can start with the even-money “outside” bets: Red/Black, Odd/Even, and Low/High, where Low is any number from 1-18 and High is 19-36. These are already the most popular bets in roulette, so you can’t ask for a better starting point.

Once you’re familiar with those even-money bets, you can branch out and try the other outside bets (Dozen and Column), then move on to the “inside” bets like the Corner and the Six Line. You can learn more about all these bets by reading the game descriptions at Bovada Casino, as well as the other informative articles we have in our vault.

6. Understand the Odds

Each bet on the wheel comes with its own chances of winning, so if you want to stay on top of the game, you need to know the odds. For example, those even-money bets we just mentioned all pay out at 1-to-1, but your odds of winning are slightly less; that’s because each roulette wheel also has a single-zero (“0”), and maybe a double-zero (“00”), depending on which game you’re playing. More on that later.

7. Use the Practice Play Mode

The best things in life are free – and that includes the Practice Play mode at Bovada Casino. Instead of shelling out big bucks (or any bucks) for roulette lessons, just select Practice Play and try out all the different roulette games we have for you at Bovada. This will give you the opportunity to test out every bet you can make for each game before you start playing for real money. You also might find you prefer one game over another.

8. Give Live Dealer Roulette a Spin

To get the full roulette experience at Bovada, don’t forget about our Live Dealer casino games. The “Dealer” in this case is actually a croupier, since there aren’t any cards to deal in roulette. You’ll get a taste of what live dealer roulette is all about, which will help enhance your appreciation of the game. If you prefer not to interact with people, you can also play AutoRoulette games while you’re in the Live Dealer section. The choice is yours.

9. Focus on European Roulette

Our last two roulette tips are all about lowering the house edge. The lower the edge, the less money the house will collect in the long run, giving you the most value possible for your sessions.

Generally speaking, there are two types of roulette on the casino floor: European Roulette and American Roulette. The European wheel has only the single-zero on it, which creates a house edge of 2.70% for every possible bet you can make. The American wheel with the additional double-zero leads to a house edge of 5.26% for every bet – except one.

10. Avoid the Top Line Bet

That one bet is the Top Line, also known as the Basket bet. This is a combo bet that covers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. Your chances of winning are 33-to-5, or 6.6-to-1, but the payout is 6-to-1, which creates a house edge of 7.69%. It’s the most expensive bet you can make in this game, and it’s only available when you play American Roulette (the Top Line in European Roulette covers 0, 1, 2 and 3).

Having said that, since roulette should be played for entertainment, we’re not going to recommend that you never make the Top Line bet – or that you never play American Roulette. Instead, consider dividing up your sessions (and your bets) with respect to the different house edges; play European Roulette more often than American Roulette, and when you’re at the American wheel, sprinkle in the occasional Top Line bet if it will add to the fun.
